Regular yoga practise gives me the ability to deal with life’s challenges.
Most days when I walk into the studio, my brain is running - fast. As soon as I open the door and walk up the stairs, I can feel that I’m wired. I run three businesses, so my day-to-day work is busy and stressful. After 20 minutes in a yoga class I notice a change, and I’m able to be present and let go of the day.
I honestly don’t think I could manage the stress of my work without dedicating time to practice yoga every week. If you’d told me at 25 that I’d be doing yoga and meditating, I wouldn’t have believed you, but after my first few hot yoga classes I already started sleeping better and felt incredible the next day.
I’ve always been fairly active. I used to run and play sports when I was younger, but yoga has been revolutionary for my well being and on a spiritual level too. You feel like part of a community of people who come from all walks of life but who invest in themselves and their wellbeing through yoga and gain a lot from the spiritual energy of the class.
I like to engage in that community and because it’s been so beneficial for me, I always check in with new members and ask how they’re finding it. I get involved in the competitions and I think I’ve even won the January yoga challenge three years in a row now because I get really into it!
I’m in a particularly busy phase in my life right now but when I come to Soul Fire Studios it feels like stepping into my sanctuary.
Sometimes I think it would be easy to finish my day with a glass of wine on the sofa, but I make myself come to the studio instead and I’ve never ever regretted that choice.
One thing I’ve learned is that we have complete control over how we react to life. As well as being great exercise, yoga has been part of my spiritual journey in which I’ve been able to create space between external factors and my reaction.
So while being in class gives me the space to be present and to shake off the reality of my day, the effects last much longer. I think yoga enables me to react calmly to most things life throws at me. It gives me the space to be grateful for everything I have and helps me to have humility in most situations.
In essence, it helps me to create who I want to be at this stage in my life.
