AERIAL YOGA
What is Aerial Yoga?
Aerial yoga incorporates a silk hammock as a prop, also referred to as ‘Aerial Silks,’ but not as high as some of the more acrobatic uses of silks can be. The hammock is suspended from the ceiling so you can sit, dangle, and go upside down in it. It provides wonderful support to traditional yoga pastures, and offers the opportunity to play with unique shapes, movements, and inversions that are only available with this kind of suspension.
Why do Aerial Yoga?
Aerial yoga is becoming widely recognised as a style of yoga that is complementary to more traditional, mat-based yoga practices.
Using the silks, you can find stability and safety in poses that you might shy away from on the mat, such as inversions. Aerial variations challenge you by using muscles not frequently used in other forms of yoga. Pulling your own body weight helps to build core and arm strength in every class.
The techniques utilised in this practice guide you into the yoga posture using the silks to create the desired alignment and traction that will bring about the benefits of the pose. The silks ensure that you remain in the posture with support and strength.
Finally, an Aerial Savasana (final relaxation) leaves you wrapped in a silk cocoon allowing you to surrender and find stillness within.
New to Aerial?
Aerial is a creative and playful form of yoga. It gives us the freedom to embrace to joyfulness we had as children: to flip, roll and go upside down whilst being safely held and supported by the Aerial ‘silks’. With a variety of classes to choose from, we have something for everyone. If you are new to Aerial Yoga we recommend you attend the Aerial Open class to get to know the silks and how to use them safely and with confidence. We recommend that you don’t eat anything or drink caffeine a minimum of two hours before class.
What to wear:
As opposed to other styles of yoga, it is best to wear leggings and a t-shirt or long-sleeved top to protect the skin from the silks. Jewellery should be removed. Mats are not necessary (unless you prefer one in the Aerial Yin session). We have soft flooring for safety and comfort.
